Early Life and Family

Charles-Richard Lambert was born in New York City. Later, he moved to New Orleans, a vibrant city in Louisiana. He married a free Creole woman of color. Their first son, Charles Lucien Lambert, was born in 1828. He also became a famous musician.

After his first wife passed away, Lambert married Coralie Suzanne Orzy (1820–1889). She was also a free woman of color. They had a son named Sidney Lambert in 1838. Both Charles-Richard's sons learned music from him. They grew up to be well-known musicians and composers themselves. Even his grandson, Lucien-Léon Guillaume Lambert, born in 1858, followed in their footsteps. He also became a respected musician and composer.

A Conductor and Teacher

Lambert worked as a music teacher, sharing his knowledge with many students. He also served as a conductor for the Philharmonic Society. This was the very first orchestra in New Orleans that wasn't connected to a theater. One of his notable students was Edmond Dédé, who also became a famous musician.

Lambert passed away on March 25, 1862. He was in Port-au-Prince, Haiti at the time. He had been performing there with his son Sidney. Charles-Richard Lambert left behind a strong musical legacy through his own work and his talented family.
