Sidney Lambert (1838–1905) was a talented African-American musician. He was a pianist, a music teacher, and a composer. Sidney was born before the American Civil War. He was born as a free person of color, meaning he was not enslaved. His family was famous for their musical skills. They even became well-known around the world!
Sidney Lambert's Musical Journey
Sidney Lambert was born in New Orleans. His father, Charles-Richard Lambert, was also a pianist and composer. Sidney's mother was Coralie Suzanne Orzy, a Creole woman. Sidney and his older brother, Charles Lucien Lambert, learned music from their father.
In 1854, Sidney's brother Charles moved to France with his family. Sidney Lambert also lived and worked in France for a time. He even played piano for King Dom Pedro at the Royal court in Portugal! This was in the 1870s. Sidney was praised for his new and creative ideas in music. His nephew, Lucien-Léon Guillaume Lambert, was also a musician at the court.
Sidney Lambert passed away in Paris in 1905. His important papers are kept at the National Library in Paris. These papers include thirty-two pieces of music he wrote between 1866 and 1899. It seems he was the only one in his family to publish music in New Orleans.
