Charles Alexander Shaw (December 31, 1944 – April 12, 2020) was an important American judge. He served as a United States district judge. This means he worked in a federal court in Missouri.

Becoming a Judge
Early Life and Education
Charles Shaw was born in Jackson, Tennessee. He went to college and earned several degrees. In 1966, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harris Stowe State College. He then earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Missouri in 1971. Finally, he got his law degree (called a Juris Doctor) from the Columbus School of Law in 1974.
Starting His Legal Career
After law school, Shaw worked as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board from 1974 to 1976. This board helps with rules about workers and companies. He then worked as a private lawyer in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1976 to 1980.
From 1980 to 1987, he was an Assistant United States Attorney. In this role, he represented the U.S. government in legal cases. Later, he became a state court judge in Missouri from 1987 to 1993.
Serving as a Federal Judge
On October 25, 1993, President Bill Clinton chose Charles Shaw to be a federal judge. He was nominated for a new judge position in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The United States Senate approved his nomination on November 20, 1993. He officially became a judge on November 22, 1993.
Judge Shaw served as a district judge until December 31, 2009. On that date, he took "senior status". This means he continued to work as a judge, but with a reduced caseload. Charles Shaw passed away on April 12, 2020, at the age of 75.
