Charles Aylmer (born August 29, 1786 – died July 4, 1847) was an important Jesuit priest from Ireland. He dedicated his life to education and helping the Catholic community.

Early Life & Education

Charles Aylmer was born in a place called Painstown, near Kilcock in County Kildare, Ireland. This was on August 29, 1786. His father, also named Charles Aylmer, was involved in important meetings for Catholics in 1792.

Young Charles decided to join the Society of Jesus, which is also known as the Jesuit order. He began his studies at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England. Later, in 1814, he earned a special degree called a D.D. (Doctor of Divinity) while living in Palermo, Italy. He stayed there for several years.

Writing and Teaching

While in Palermo, Charles Aylmer worked with two other Jesuits, Paul Ferley and Bartholomew Esmonde. Together, they wrote helpful books for British Catholics living there. These books included A short Explanation of the Principal Articles of the Catholic Faith and The Devout Christian's Daily Companion. They were guides for understanding and practicing the Catholic faith.

In 1817, Father Aylmer returned to Ireland and became the rector (which means the head or principal) of Clongowes Wood College. This was a very important school. By 1820, he became a full member of the Jesuit order. From about 1821 until his death in 1847, he lived in Dublin.

Building Colleges and Communities

Father Aylmer played a big part in starting new educational places. In 1818, he helped establish Tullabeg College by arranging for the land lease. He also served as a leader, called a "superior," at the Dublin Jesuit Residence several times, including in 1816, 1822, 1829, and 1841. In 1829, he was present when the first stone was laid for a new church on Gardiner Street in Dublin.

He was also keen on making sure Catholic books were available. He helped promote a group in Dublin that focused on printing these books. Charles Aylmer passed away on July 4, 1847, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education and faith.
