Charles Britton Fulton (born May 12, 1910 – died May 15, 1996) was an important American judge. He served on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. This court handles federal cases in the southern part of Florida.
Early Life and Career
Charles Britton Fulton was born in Fallon, Nevada. He grew up and later went to college. He studied law at the Fredric G. Levin College of Law at the University of Florida. He earned his law degree in 1935.
After finishing school, Fulton started working as a lawyer. He had his own law practice in West Palm Beach, Florida. He worked there from 1935 to 1963.
He also held other important jobs. In 1942, he was an assistant state attorney general for Florida. This means he helped the state's top lawyer. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the United States Naval Reserve. This was during World War II.
Later, he was a legal advisor for the Port of Palm Beach. He also led a savings and loan association. These experiences gave him a lot of knowledge about law and business.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1963, President John F. Kennedy chose Charles Fulton to become a federal judge. This was a big honor. He was nominated for a new judge position in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
The United States Senate had to approve his nomination. They confirmed him on April 24, 1963. Soon after, on April 26, 1963, he officially became a judge.
Judge Fulton served on this court for many years. From 1966 to 1977, he was the Chief Judge. This means he was the main judge and leader of the court. He helped manage the court's work and cases.
In 1978, Judge Fulton took on a new role called senior status. This allows experienced judges to work a reduced schedule. It also lets new judges be appointed to help with the workload. He continued to serve until his death on May 15, 1996, in West Palm Beach, Florida.
