Charles Cooke III, born on July 1, 1994, is an American professional basketball player. He used to play for teams like the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA G League. Before becoming a pro, he played college basketball for James Madison University and the University of Dayton.
High School Basketball
Charles Cooke played basketball at the Trenton Catholic Academy in his home state of New Jersey. During his junior year, he scored about 7 points and grabbed less than 1 rebound per game. In his senior year, he got even better. He averaged over 14 points and 1 rebound per game. After high school, he decided to play college basketball for James Madison University.
College Basketball Journey
At James Madison University, Charles started strong. In his first year, he averaged nearly 6 points and almost 3 rebounds per game. He improved a lot in his second year. He averaged over 14 points, 5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
After his second year, Charles decided to transfer to the University of Dayton. He had to sit out one year before he could play for Dayton. In his first season at Dayton, he was a key player. He averaged over 15 points, almost 6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game.
In his final year of college, he continued to play well. He averaged nearly 16 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. Charles was special at Dayton. He was the only player to have two seasons where he averaged at least 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block per game. He also shot well from three-point range and took many free throws.
Professional Basketball Career
After college, Charles hoped to be picked in the 2017 NBA draft. However, he was not chosen by any team. Even so, he got a chance to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2017 NBA Summer League. He played well, averaging 10 points and 3 rebounds per game.
On August 2, 2017, Charles signed a special deal called a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. This meant he would split his time between the Pelicans and their minor league team. The minor league team was the Greensboro Swarm in the NBA G League. Charles made his first NBA game appearance on October 28, 2017. He scored two points in a big win against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Later, Charles played for other teams. In 2018, he signed with the Miami Heat but was soon sent to their G-League team, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He played for the Skyforce for a while. In 2019, he played for a team in Italy called De' Longhi Treviso. After that, he played in Puerto Rico for the Atléticos de San Germán. In 2021, he joined the Hamilton Honey Badgers in Canada. In 2022, he briefly played for the Maine Celtics before returning to the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
