Charles Dallas (born around 1767, died April 26, 1855) was a British military officer and a leader in managing colonies. He was the very last Governor of Saint Helena for the East India Company.

His Early Life

Charles Dallas was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was William Dallas, and his mother was Davidona Haliburton. His mother's family was from Muirhouseland, and her father had been a important leader (Provost) in Edinburgh.

A Career in the Military

Dallas spent many years working for the Honourable East India Company, which was a powerful British trading company that also had its own army.

During a time of big wars called the Napoleonic Wars, he joined a group of soldiers called the Shropshire Yeomanry. He became a Captain in this group in 1804.

Later, he became a Colonel of the St. Helena Regiment of Infantry in 1827. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1828 while serving in St. Helena and areas east of the Cape of Good Hope. On February 6, 1828, even before his promotion to Brigadier-General was fully official, he took on the important role of governor of St. Helena.

His Family Life

Charles Dallas got married in Edinburgh on January 9, 1801. His wife was Janet, who was the only surviving child of George Cockburn Haldane of Gleneagles, Scotland.

Brigadier-General Charles Dallas was the final governor of Saint Helena appointed by the East India Company. He held this important position from 1828 until 1834.

Later Life and Death

Charles Dallas passed away on April 26, 1855, at Trefusis House in Exmouth, England. He was almost 88 years old. He had outlived his wife, Janet, and three of his youngest sons. His oldest son, Captain Thomas Dallas Haldane, sadly drowned at sea in 1857. Charles Dallas also had three daughters named Bethia, Davidona Eleanor, and Caroline, and they all had children of their own.
