Charles Dickson (merchant) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Charles Dickson (born in 1746 – died on September 3, 1796) was an important person in Nova Scotia. He was a merchant (someone who buys and sells goods), a shipbuilder (someone who builds ships), a farmer, and a political figure (someone involved in government). He served in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly (like a local parliament) for Onslow Township from 1776 to 1777 and again from 1783 until he passed away in 1796.

Charles Dickson was born in New England. When he was young, he moved to King's County in Nova Scotia. In 1772, he married Amelia Bishop. Around the same time, Dickson made his home in Onslow. He worked as the registrar of deeds for Colchester County from 1777 to 1796. This meant he kept official records of land ownership. He was also a justice of the peace, which is like a local judge who helps keep order.

In 1796, Charles Dickson traveled to the West Indies. While there, he caught yellow fever, a serious illness. He died in Halifax on his way back home.

His sons, Thomas, Robert, and William, all followed in his footsteps and became members of the provincial assembly. His daughter Elizabeth married Samuel George William Archibald, who also became a member of the assembly. This shows that the Dickson family played a big role in Nova Scotia's early government.
