Charles Esque Fleming (born in 1962) is an American lawyer and judge from Ohio. He serves as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

Education and Early Career

Academic Background

Charles Fleming studied at Kent State University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986. Later, he attended Case Western Reserve University Law School. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 1990. This degree is needed to become a lawyer.

First Legal Jobs

After law school, Fleming worked at a law firm in Cleveland. This was from 1990 to 1991. Then, he joined the office of the federal public defender. He worked there from 1991 to 2022. A public defender helps people who cannot afford a lawyer. He was an assistant federal public defender.

Leadership Roles

During his time as a public defender, Fleming took on more responsibilities. From 2010 to 2016, he supervised the investigative and paralegal staff. These are teams that help lawyers prepare cases. From 2016 to 2021, he led the trial team in Cleveland.

Becoming a Federal Judge

Nomination Process

On September 30, 2021, President Joe Biden chose Charles Fleming to be a federal judge. He was nominated for a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. This seat became open when Judge James S. Gwin retired.

The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing for his nomination. This happened on November 17, 2021. The committee then voted on his nomination. On December 16, 2021, they approved him by a vote of 13 to 9.

Senate Confirmation

His nomination was sent back to the President briefly. However, he was renominated on the same day, January 3, 2022. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved him again on January 13, 2022.

On February 1, 2022, the full Senate voted to move forward with his nomination. Later that day, the Senate confirmed him as a judge. The vote was 56 to 42. He officially became a judge on February 8, 2022. He was sworn in on March 11, 2022. Charles Fleming is the second active African-American judge on this court.
