Charles Esque Fleming (born in 1962) is an American lawyer and judge from Ohio. He serves as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. This means he works in a federal court that handles important legal cases in northern Ohio.

Learning and School
Charles Fleming worked hard in school to prepare for his career in law.
College Education
He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), from Kent State University in 1986. A BA degree usually means you've studied a wide range of subjects.

Helping People as a Public Defender
For many years, from 1991 to 2022, he worked as an assistant federal public defender in Cleveland. A public defender is a lawyer who helps people who cannot afford to hire their own lawyer. They make sure everyone has a fair chance in court.
He also took on leadership roles in the public defender's office. From 2010 to 2016, he supervised the investigative and paralegal staff. From 2016 to 2021, he was the supervisor for the trial team in Cleveland.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 2021, Charles Fleming was chosen to become a federal judge.
Nomination by the President
On September 30, 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Charles Fleming to be a United States district judge. He was chosen for a position that became open when Judge James S. Gwin retired.
Approval by the Senate
To become a federal judge, a person must be approved by the United States Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing about his nomination. On February 1, 2022, the Senate voted to approve his nomination.
Starting His Role
He officially received his judicial commission on February 8, 2022. He was sworn in as a judge on March 11, 2022. Charles Fleming became the second active African-American judge on this court.
