Charles Francis Arnold Howard, 5th Earl of Wicklow (born November 5, 1839 – died June 20, 1881) was an Anglo-Irish nobleman. This means he was a member of a noble family in Ireland with British roots. He held important titles and responsibilities during his lifetime.

Early Life and Education

Charles Howard was the oldest son of Reverend Francis Howard. His grandfather was William Howard, 3rd Earl of Wicklow. Charles went to Magdalen College, Oxford, which is a famous university in England.

After his studies, he joined the army. In 1860, he became a cornet (a junior officer) in the 11th Hussars, a cavalry regiment. Later, he moved to the 9th Hussars.

Public Service and Titles

Charles Howard had several important roles. From 1864 to 1866, he worked as an Aide-de-Camp for the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. An Aide-de-Camp is like a personal assistant to a high-ranking official. The Lord Lieutenant was the British monarch's representative in Ireland at that time.

In 1869, his uncle, William Howard, passed away. Charles then inherited his uncle's titles, becoming the 5th Earl of Wicklow.

Three years later, in 1872, he was chosen as an Irish representative peer. This meant he could represent Ireland's nobility in the House of Lords in the United Kingdom's Parliament. He joined the Conservative group there.

From 1874 to 1879, Lord Wicklow served as the State Steward to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. This was another important position, helping to manage the Lord Lieutenant's household and official duties.

Later Life

Charles Howard never married. He passed away in 1881. After his death, his younger brother, Cecil Howard, became the 6th Earl of Wicklow.
