Charles I. DeBevoise (born October 17, 1872 – died December 10, 1958) was an officer in the United States Army. He served in the early 20th century and was honored with the Distinguished Service Medal.
Early Life and Education
Charles I. DeBevoise was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 17, 1872. His parents were Isaac C. Debevoise and Caroline A. (Schenck) Debevoise. He went to schools in Brooklyn, including the Brooklyn Polytechnic Preparatory School.
After high school, he attended Yale College and graduated in 1894. Following his graduation, he started a career working in finance.
Military Career
DeBevoise had an important military career. He served in the New York Army National Guard. He commanded the 107th Infantry Regiment.
During World War I, between 1918 and 1919, DeBevoise led the 53rd Infantry Brigade. This brigade was part of the 27th Division. For his service, he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal.
He was promoted to brigadier general. This promotion came after his service on the Hindenburg Line, a strong defensive position during the war.
Death and Burial
Charles I. DeBevoise passed away on December 10, 1958. He is buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Family Life
DeBevoise married Sarah Fiske Pilcher on November 1, 1899. They had two daughters named Carol (born 1901) and Martha (born 1903). Sarah died in 1916.
Later, in 1926, DeBevoise married Florens Hutchins. She passed away in 1951.
