Charles James Munnerlyn (born February 14, 1822 – died May 17, 1898) was an American politician and military officer. He played a part in the American Civil War, serving the Confederate States of America. He was a member of their congress and led a special cavalry unit.
Early Life
Charles James Munnerlyn was born in Georgetown, South Carolina. Later, his family moved to Decatur County, Georgia. He went to Emory College for his education. After college, he studied law. This means he learned how laws work and how to be a lawyer. He learned from a judge named Augustus Baldwin Longstreet.
Role in the Civil War
Before joining the army, Munnerlyn attended an important meeting. This was the Secession Convention in Georgia. At this meeting, he signed the Ordinance of Secession. This document declared that Georgia was leaving the United States.
After this, he joined the Confederate Army. From 1862 to 1864, he represented Georgia. He served in the First Confederate Congress. This was like the government for the Confederate States. In 1864, he was sent to Florida. There, he helped create a special group of soldiers. This group was called the Cow Cavalry. They were known for moving cattle to feed the soldiers. Munnerlyn also helped Judah P. Benjamin, an important Confederate leader, escape. He did this with John T. Lesley and James McKay.
