Charles Leslie Wrenn facts for kids
Charles Leslie Wrenn (born 1895, died 1969) was an English expert in language and literature. He studied at the University of Oxford. After that, he taught English at the University of Leeds for a year.
He returned to Oxford and became a very important professor. In 1945, he took over the job of Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon. This was the same job that J.R.R. Tolkien had before him. Wrenn kept this job until 1963.
He was also a member of Pembroke College, Oxford. Wrenn was part of a famous discussion group called the "Inklings". This group met in Oxford from the 1930s to the late 1940s. Other famous members included C. S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.
Wrenn wrote several books. These include The English Language (1949) and A Study of Old English Literature (1967). He also wrote An Old English Grammar with Randolph Quirk (1955). He was interested in comparing different types of literature. He also studied poets like T. S. Eliot.
