Charles McCorrie (or McCurry) was a brave soldier from Ireland. He was born in 1830 in Killead, County Antrim. He is famous for receiving the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for bravery in the British and Commonwealth forces. This special medal is given to soldiers who show amazing courage when facing the enemy.

Who Was Charles McCorrie?

Charles McCorrie was a private in the 57th Regiment. This unit was part of the British Army. He served during the Crimean War, a big conflict that happened in the mid-1800s. At the time of his brave act, he was about 25 years old.

His Brave Act

On June 23, 1855, a very dangerous event happened. It was during the Siege of Sevastopol in the Crimean Peninsula. During the battle, an enemy soldier threw a live shell. A shell is like a small bomb. It landed near Private McCorrie. Instead of running away, he quickly grabbed the dangerous shell. He then threw it back over the wall, away from his fellow soldiers. This incredibly brave act saved many lives.

The Victoria Cross

Because of his amazing courage, Charles McCorrie was given the Victoria Cross. This medal is shaped like a cross and is made from bronze. It has the words "For Valour" on it. It is a very rare and respected award. It shows that someone acted with extreme bravery.

Life and Legacy

Charles McCorrie was born in 1830. He died a few years after his brave act, on April 8, 1857. He passed away in Malta when he was only 26 or 27 years old. He is remembered as a hero who showed incredible bravery during a time of war. His grave is in the Msida Bastion Historic Garden in Floriana, Malta.
