Charles Nelson Clevert Jr. (born October 11, 1947) is a retired American judge. He served as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
Becoming a Judge: Education and Early Career
Charles Clevert Jr. was born in Richmond, Virginia. He studied at Davis and Elkins College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. Later, he attended Georgetown University Law Center, where he received his law degree (Juris Doctor) in 1972.
After finishing law school, Clevert began his career in public service. From 1972 to 1975, he worked as an assistant district attorney for Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. He then became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, serving from 1975 to 1977. For a short time in 1977, he also worked as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
From 1977 to 1995, Clevert served as a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. He was the Chief United States Bankruptcy Judge from 1986 to 1995. During this time, he also taught at the University of Wisconsin Law School from 1989 to 1990.
Serving as a Federal Judge
On December 7, 1995, President Bill Clinton nominated Charles Clevert to become a judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. The United States Senate approved his nomination on July 17, 1996. He officially became a judge on July 29, 1996.
Clevert served as the Chief Judge for the court from September 1, 2009, until October 31, 2012. After this, he took on a "senior status" role on October 31, 2012. This means he continued to work but with a reduced caseload. He fully retired from his active judicial service on March 31, 2017.
