Charles Edward Rawdon-Hastings (born January 5, 1855 – died May 17, 1920) was a Scottish nobleman. He held the title of the 11th Earl of Loudoun. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant, which is a special helper to the King or Queen's representative in a county.
Early Life of Charles Edward
Charles Edward was born on January 5, 1855. His first name was Charles Edward Abney-Hastings. His parents were Charles Abney-Hastings, 1st Baron Donington and Edith Rawdon-Hastings, 10th Countess of Loudoun. He was their oldest son.
He had several brothers and sisters. His older sister, Lady Flora Hastings, married a very important person, Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk. His younger brother, Gilbert Clifton-Hastings-Campbell, 3rd Baron Donington, later became a baron too.
Becoming an Earl
When Charles Edward was 19 years old, on January 23, 1874, he inherited his mother's titles. This meant he became the 11th Earl of Loudoun. He also took on other related titles.
Later, on April 8, 1887, his name was officially changed. It became Charles Edward Rawdon-Hastings by a special permission called a Royal Licence. This is a formal document from the King or Queen.
On July 24, 1895, he inherited another title from his father. He became the 2nd Baron Donington.
His Public Roles
Charles Edward also served in the military. He was a Lieutenant in the Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry. This was a type of volunteer army unit that rode horses.
He also held the position of Deputy Lieutenant for Ayrshire. A Deputy Lieutenant helps the Lord-Lieutenant, who is the King's or Queen's personal representative in a county. They often help with local ceremonies and events.
Family Life
On February 4, 1880, Charles Edward married the Hon. Alice Fitzalan-Howard. They were married in London. Alice was born in 1856. Her father was Edward Fitzalan-Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Glossop.
Sadly, Charles Edward and Alice did not have any children. Alice, Lady Loudoun, passed away on May 10, 1915.
Charles Edward, Lord Loudoun, died a few years later. He passed away on May 17, 1920, in Ashby-de-la-Zouch. This town is in North West Leicestershire.
After his death, his titles were passed on to his nieces. These were the daughters of his brother Paulyn. His younger brother, Gilbert Clifton-Hastings-Campbell, 3rd Baron Donington, inherited some titles as well.
