The title of Earl of Loudoun is a special noble rank from Scotland. It's named after a place called Loudoun in Ayrshire. This important title was first given in 1633 by King Charles I.
The first person to hold this title was John Campbell. He was already known as the 2nd Lord Campbell of Loudoun. Along with the Earldom, he also received another title, Lord Tarrinzean and Mauchline. John Campbell's wife, Margaret, inherited a title from her grandfather, Hugh Campbell. Hugh was the first Lord Campbell of Loudoun. He gave up his title so John could have it, and then John became an Earl.
Later, the 6th Countess of Loudoun married a man who became the Marquess of Hastings. For a while, the next three Earls of Loudoun also held this Marquess title. But when the 4th Marquess died, the Marquess title ended. The Earldom of Loudoun, however, continued. It passed to the oldest daughter of the 2nd Marquess.
The person who is next in line to inherit the Earldom is called the "heir apparent." They use a special "courtesy title," which is like a nickname, called Lord Mauchline.
