Early Life and Family Name
James was the only son of Sir James Campbell, who was also a Member of Parliament. His mother was Lady Jean Boyle. In 1729, when James was just three years old, he inherited the Rowallan estate near Kilmaurs, Ayrshire. This estate belonged to his grandmother, Jean Mure. Because of this inheritance, he added "Mure" to his name, becoming James Mure-Campbell.
Inheriting Titles and Land
In 1745, James's father died during the Battle of Fontenoy. James then inherited the Lawers estate near Perth. Many years later, in 1782, he became the 5th Earl of Loudoun after his cousin passed away. This made him a very important noble in Scotland.
Military and Political Career
James Mure-Campbell had a distinguished career. He served in the British Army and rose through the ranks. By 1781, he had achieved the high rank of major general. Besides his military service, he was also involved in politics. He represented Ayrshire in the British Parliament from 1754 to 1761.
Marriage and Descendants
James married Flora Macleod, who was the daughter of John Macleod from Raasay. They had one child together, a daughter named Flora Mure-Campbell. After James passed away, his daughter Flora inherited his title, becoming the 6th Countess of Loudoun.
