General Sir Charles Stephen Gore (born December 26, 1793 – died September 4, 1869) was an important British general. He was also known as the Honorable Charles Gore.

Early Life and Family
Charles Stephen Gore was born into a noble family. His father was Arthur Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran. His mother was Elizabeth Underwood, who was his father's third wife.
Charles had several brothers and sisters. One of his sisters was Lady Cecilia Underwood. She later married Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, who was a son of King George III. This made Charles Stephen Gore connected to the British Royal Family! He also had a half-brother named Arthur Gore, 3rd Earl of Arran.
Military Career
Charles Gore joined the army in 1808 when he was about 15 years old. He fought in several important wars and battles.
Fighting in the Peninsular War
During the Peninsular War, he took part in two major battles in 1812:
These were tough battles where armies surrounded and attacked fortified cities.
Service in Canada
Later, he served in Canada. He fought in the Battle of Saint-Denis in 1837. This battle was part of the Lower Canada Rebellion, a time when people in Canada fought for more control over their government.
Leading Regiments
Sir Charles Gore became a Colonel, which is a high rank in the army.
- From 1855 to 1861, he was the Colonel of the 91st (Argyllshire) Regiment of Foot.
- In 1861, he moved to lead the 6th (Royal 1st Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot. He stayed in this role until he passed away in 1869.
He also served as Lieutenant Governor of Chelsea Hospital, which is a home for retired soldiers in London.
Personal Life
Sir Charles Gore married Sarah Rachel Fraser in 1824. She was from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her father, James Fraser, was an important member of the Council of Nova Scotia.
Charles and Sarah had five children together:
- Adelaide Rachel Gore (died 1893)
- Maj. James Arthur Charles Gore (1826–1901)
- Eliza Amelia Gore (1829–1916). She married William Hay, 19th Earl of Erroll. His grandfather was King William IV.
- Lt.-Col. Charles Clitheroe Gore (1839–1926)
- Lt.-Col. Frederick Augustus Gore (1844–1931)
Sir Charles Gore passed away on September 4, 1869, in Chelsea, London. He was buried in Brompton Cemetery in London. His wife, Sarah, died later in 1880.
Legacy
The town of Gore, Nova Scotia in Canada was named after him. This happened because he served there for many years.
