Charles Stewart (born May 18, 1840, died September 27, 1907) was an English scientist. He studied animals and their body structures. This is called a zoologist and a comparative anatomist.

He became a special member of the Royal Society in 1896. This is a very old and respected science group. He was also the president of the Linnean Society from 1890 to 1894. This society focuses on natural history.

About Charles Stewart

Stewart was born in Plymouth, a city in England. He studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. In 1862, he earned his qualification as a surgeon.

After working in Plymouth for four years, he moved to London. In 1866, he became the curator of the museum at St. Thomas's Hospital. This hospital later moved to a new location.

In 1871, Stewart started teaching. He became a lecturer on comparative anatomy at the hospital's medical school. Later, in 1881, he also taught physiology. He also taught biology and physiology at Bedford College for Women from 1882 to 1886.

Work at the Hunterian Museum

In 1884, Stewart left St. Thomas's Hospital. He became the Conservator of the Hunterian Museum. This important museum is part of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He took over from another famous scientist, Sir William Henry Flower.

From 1886, he also became a professor at the college. He gave yearly lectures on comparative anatomy and physiology until 1902. Stewart was very good at using the museum's collection. He studied many specimens collected by John Hunter. His work helped connect many scientific facts for the first time.

He gave many lectures on different topics. These included the structure of animals and how they protect their young. He was known for speaking without notes. He also drew amazing pictures on the blackboard. Sadly, his lectures were never published. His important work can mostly be found in the museum's catalogues.

Other Achievements

Even though he was often unwell, Stewart was very active. From 1894 to 1897, he was a professor of physiology at the Royal Institution. He gave special talks there on two occasions.

In 1866, he became a member of the Linnean Society. He later served as its president from 1890 to 1894. He also helped start the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He was its first treasurer.

Stewart was also the secretary of the Royal Microscopical Society from 1879 to 1883. He cared deeply about the Marine Biological Association. This group was set up in Plymouth, his hometown. In 1896, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1899, he received an honorary degree from Aberdeen University.

Charles Stewart passed away in London on September 27, 1907. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery.

Family Life

In 1867, Charles Stewart married Emily Browne. They had three sons and two daughters.
