The Charles W. Jenkins House is a special old home located at 67 Pine Street in Bangor, Maine. It was built a long time ago, between 1845 and 1846. This house is a great example of a style called Gothic Revival architecture. It looks like a charming old cottage, even though it's in a city. Because it's so well-preserved and important, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This means it's recognized as a historic treasure.

What Makes This House Special?

Discovering the Jenkins House Design

The Jenkins House stands on the east side of Pine Street. It is just a short distance south of State Street in downtown Bangor. This house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a shape that is almost square. The roof has a sharp peak on the sides. It also has a very steep gable on the front. This front gable is a key feature of its style.

Exploring Its Unique Features

The front of the house faces west. It has three main sections. The main door is in the middle. It is covered by a small porch called a portico. This portico has round posts and a fancy railing above it. On either side of the door, there are pairs of windows. These windows have special triangle shapes and decorative trim above them. The sides of the house also have many windows. They are similar to the ones on the front.

Inside the Historic Jenkins House

The inside of the house is just as interesting as the outside. It has many beautiful details. You can see different design styles from the past. For example, some door frames show an early Italianate style. The main staircase has a Federal style design. On the second floor, the fireplaces have original Greek Revival surrounds. These different styles show how popular various designs were back then.

Who Was Charles W. Jenkins?

Building a Home in Bangor

The Charles W. Jenkins House was built for Charles W. Jenkins himself. He was born in Falmouth, Maine. Later, he married a woman from Bangor. They decided to build their home in this city. The house was finished in 1846.

Inspired by Gothic Style

Charles W. Jenkins likely chose the Gothic Revival style for his house because of his family. Some of his relatives were part of the Episcopal church. This church had recently built St. John's Episcopal Church in the same Gothic Revival style. This new church might have inspired Jenkins. The house also shows ideas from a famous book. The book was called Cottage Residences by Andrew Jackson Downing. Downing was a very important person in American landscape design and architecture. He helped make the Gothic Revival style popular for homes.
