Charles Waterhouse (born July 1, 1893 – died March 2, 1975) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He also received the Military Cross for his bravery. He was a Deputy Lieutenant and a Justice of the Peace for Derbyshire.

Charles Waterhouse's Early Life and Education

Charles Waterhouse was born in Salford. He was the second son of Thomas Crompton Waterhouse. His family lived at Lomberdale Hall in Bakewell, Derbyshire.

He went to school at Cheltenham. Later, he studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, a famous university. He earned a degree in Economics in 1914.

Serving in World War I

During World War I, Charles Waterhouse served in France. He was part of the 1st Life Guards. This was a special cavalry regiment.

In 1917, he married Beryl Ford. They had two sons and one daughter together.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Charles Waterhouse first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1922 and 1923. He ran for the Derbyshire North-East area but did not win.

However, he was elected as an MP for Leicester South in 1924. He held this seat until 1945. After a short break, he was re-elected in 1950 for Leicester South-East. He served as an MP for this area until 1957.

Important Roles in Government

Charles Waterhouse held many important jobs in the government. He started as a Parliamentary Private Secretary in 1928. This role helps a government minister with their work.

He then moved to other roles, including:

  • Assistant Whip (1935–1936)
  • Junior Lord of the Treasury (1936)
  • Comptroller of the Household (1937–1939)
  • Treasurer of the Household (1939)

He also served as Assistant Postmaster-General from 1939 to 1941. This job involved helping with postal services. From 1941 to 1945, he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade. This role helped manage trade and business in the country.

In 1944, he became a Privy Counsellor. This is a special honor given to important people who advise the King or Queen. After leaving Parliament, he chaired a company called Tanganyika Concessions from 1957 to 1966.

Charles Waterhouse passed away in Sheffield when he was 82 years old.
