About Dr Rock
Early Life and Career
Chas White was born in Dublin, Ireland. In the 1960s, he moved to London to study medicine. He had planned to become a podiatrist, a doctor who specializes in feet. However, he decided to follow a different path and became a DJ instead. Today, he lives in Scarborough, England.
The "Dr Rock" Nickname
Chas White describes himself as a "lifelong Rock and Roll enthusiast." He even taught a college course about how Rock and Roll music developed. Because of this, the media started calling him "Dr Rock," and the name stuck!
Television and Writing
Dr Rock has appeared on television many times. He hosted a show called Dr Rock's Guide to Hollywood. This show won an award for Outstanding Achievement at the New York Festivals® International Television & Film Awards in 1996.
He also hosted The Dr Rock Show, which was shown on Yorkshire and Tyne Tees Television. He even appeared on the popular 1980s TV series, The Tube. Beyond TV, Chas White has written books about famous musicians like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. He has also written articles for well-known newspapers like The Observer and The Independent, and for magazines such as Tatler and Rolling Stone.
Radio Career
Dr Rock has a popular show on BBC Radio York. It airs every Sunday evening between 6 PM and 7 PM, GMT. Many people around the world can listen to his show.
In December 2011, BBC Radio announced plans to cut many local radio shows to save money. Dr Rock's program was one of those scheduled to be removed. This news made many fans upset, and they sent protest letters. Luckily, Dr Rock's show continued! He was still broadcasting every Sunday. In 2014, he celebrated 20 years with BBC York. He continued to host his show for many years after that.
In 2017, Chas White decided to sell his amazing "Dr Rock collection." This collection included about five thousand vinyl records and many other special memorabilia items.
