Charles X. Zimmerman (born January 18, 1865 – died November 14, 1926) was an important American leader. He served as a Brigadier General during World War I. He was also a successful businessman and a politician.

Zimmerman had a passion for sports too. He was the vice president of the very first American Football League. He also owned one of the league's teams, the Cleveland Panthers.

Life and Achievements

Military Service and Leadership

Charles Zimmerman began his military journey on May 8, 1884. He joined the Fifth Ohio Infantry. He quickly showed his leadership skills.

During the Spanish–American War, he led Company F, Fifth Ohio Infantry. He continued to serve in the Ohio National Guard. On August 5, 1917, he was promoted to Brigadier General.

As a Brigadier General, Zimmerman commanded the 73rd Infantry Brigade. This brigade was part of the 37th Infantry Division. He served in important locations like Camp Sheridan, Alabama, and Camp Lee.

He also played a role in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive during World War I. This was a major battle for the American forces. Zimmerman was honorably discharged from the military on February 5, 1919.

His Football Team: The Cleveland Panthers

Beyond his military career, Charles Zimmerman loved football. In 1926, he became the owner of a professional football team. This team was called the Cleveland Panthers.

He also served as the vice president of the American Football League. This shows his dedication to the sport. The Cleveland Panthers were part of this league.

Personal Life and Legacy

Charles Zimmerman was married twice in his life. His first wife, Anna Hill, passed away in 1897. He then married Ethel Vogt on June 5, 1900.

He died unexpectedly in New York City on November 14, 1926. He was laid to rest at Knollwood Cemetery in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. Zimmerman is remembered for his service in the military and his contributions to sports and business.
