Charles de Lannoy (born around 1487 – died September 23, 1527) was a brave soldier and important leader. He came from the Low Countries (which are now parts of Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg). Charles worked for the powerful Habsburg Emperors Maximilian I and Charles V.

About His Family

Charles de Lannoy was part of the important de Lannoy noble family. He was the younger son of Jean IV de Lannoy. His mother was Philipotte de Lalaing.

In 1509, Charles married Francoise de Montbel. They had several children together. In 1526, he became the first Count of Lannoy. He also became the Emperor's Mayordomo mayor, which was a very high-ranking position in the royal household. His son, Philip de Lannoy, 2nd Prince of Sulmona, later took over his titles.

His Military and Political Career

Charles de Lannoy started working for Emperor Maximilian I. He quickly became known for his courage and strong leadership skills.

He joined the council of Charles of Burgundy, who later became Emperor Charles V. In 1515, Charles de Lannoy became the Emperor's Caballerizo mayor, a top official in charge of the royal stables and travel.

In 1516, he was made a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. This was a very special award given to important people.

Key Roles and Battles

Charles de Lannoy held many important jobs. In 1521, he became the governor of Tournai. From 1522 to 1523, he served as the viceroy of Naples. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a country or province as the king's representative.

After another leader, Prospero Colonna, died in 1523, Charles de Lannoy became the main commander of the Emperor's armies in Italy.

He played a big part in the Italian War of 1521-1525 and the War of the League of Cognac. He led the Imperial forces in important battles, including the Battle of the Sesia (1524). He also commanded the sieges of Marseille in 1524 and Pavia in 1525.

Charles de Lannoy passed away suddenly in Naples on September 23, 1527, after a short illness.
