Where Was Charleston Located?
Charleston was a settlement found about 5 miles (which is about 8 kilometers) southwest of a place called Fremont Landing, California. It was situated right by the Sacramento River, which is a very important river in California.
The Story Behind Charleston's Name
Charleston had a post office that helped the community send and receive mail. This post office was open for many years, from 1858 until 1871. The settlement was named after Charles H. Gray, who was the very first person to be in charge of the post office there. A postmaster is someone who manages a post office.
