Charlie Beamon's Baseball Career
Charlie Beamon was born in Oakland, California. He went to McClymonds High School there. He was 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 195 pounds. He batted and threw with his right hand.
MLB Debut
Beamon made his first appearance in Major League Baseball in September 1956. He played for the Baltimore Orioles. His very first game was amazing! He pitched a "shutout" against the New York Yankees. A shutout means the other team scored zero runs. He only allowed four hits and his team won 1–0. He also struck out nine batters in that game. This included Billy Martin, who he struck out three times.
Playing in the Minor Leagues
Before and after his time in MLB, Beamon played in the Minor Leagues. He played from 1953 through 1961 for many different teams. In nine Minor League seasons, he had a record of 89 wins and 69 losses. His ERA was 3.76. The ERA shows how many runs a pitcher allows per nine innings.
One of his managers, Charlie Metro, thought very highly of him. Metro said Beamon was one of the best pitching athletes he ever had. He said Beamon was "strong as an ox" and could run and hit well. Metro wondered why Beamon didn't do better in the Major Leagues.
Winter Baseball in Venezuela
Beamon also played baseball in other countries. He played "winter ball" in Venezuela during the 1957–1958 season. He played for the Leones del Caracas team. He had a great season there, with 9 wins and 6 losses. His ERA was 2.49, which was the best in the league! He also tied for the most wins in the league.
A Family of Baseball Players
Charlie Beamon's son, Charlie Beamon, Jr., also became a professional baseball player. His son played first base in Major League Baseball. He played for the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays between 1978 and 1981.
Charlie Beamon Sr. passed away in 2016. He was 81 years old and died in San Leandro, California.
