He was part of the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League (NFL) during the 1955 NFL season. Early Life and College Football Career
Charlie Brackins was born in Dallas, Texas, on January 12, 1932. He grew up in Dallas and went to Lincoln High. After high school, he played college football at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. He played there from 1951 to 1955.
Leading the Prairie View Panthers
Brackins was a starting quarterback for three years under coach Billy Nicks. He led his team, the Prairie View Panthers, to many wins. They won 33 out of 37 games in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Charlie was a tall player, standing 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 meters) and weighing 205 pounds (93 kg). He was known for his strong passing skills.
Playing in the NFL
In 1955, the Green Bay Packers chose Charlie Brackins in the sixteenth round of the 1955 NFL Draft. This was a big moment because he was the first player from a HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to play quarterback in the NFL.
His Only NFL Game
Charlie Brackins played in only one NFL game. This happened on October 23, 1955, against the Cleveland Browns. He entered the game in the final minutes. The Packers lost that game 41–10. Brackins threw two passes, but neither was completed. After this game, the Packers decided to release him. He tried out for other teams as a defensive back, but he never got another chance to play in the league.
Later Life and Recognition
Charlie Brackins passed away from cancer in 1991. Years later, in 2013, his achievements were recognized. He was elected into the Black College Football Hall of Fame. This honor celebrates his important role in football history.
