Charlie Brown, born on March 8, 1938, is a former American politician. He was a member of the Democratic party. From 1982 to 2018, he represented the 3rd District in the Indiana House of Representatives. Brown is African-American and was part of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus. In 2017, he announced he would not run for reelection.

Early Life
Charlie Brown was born in Williston, South Carolina, on March 8, 1938. He grew up in the city of Philadelphia.
Education
In 1961, Brown earned his bachelor's degree. He studied at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. This school is a public historical Black institution in Cheyney, Pennsylvania. Later, in 1982, Brown received a master's degree. He earned it from Indiana University Northwest.
Career
Brown started his career as a teacher in 1961. He taught at the Gary Community School Corporation until 1968.
From 1968 to 1988, Brown held several important roles. He was a youth coordinator for the City of Gary. He also served as the Mayor's assistant for youth activities. Brown was also the director of the Youth Services Bureau. He worked as an affirmative action officer and a risk manager too.
In 1982, Brown became a member of the Indiana House of Representatives. He represented District 3.
From 1988 to 1993, Brown was the CEO. He led the Gary Community Mental Health Center.
Today, Brown works as a consultant. He helps groups improve how government and communities work together.
Politics
Charlie Brown was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1982. He became the chairman of the Indiana House Standing Committee on Public Health. This committee focuses on health issues for the public.
In 2007, Brown supported a new law. It was called the Indiana Checkup Plan. This plan aimed to improve health care for people in Indiana. It helped more people get health insurance. It also improved care for pregnant mothers. The plan encouraged businesses to start wellness programs for their employees.
In 2010, Brown announced an important partnership. He helped the Gary Community Health Center team up with a medicaid dentist. Brown said this was a positive step for Gary. He believed it showed Gary could be a leader in providing needed services.
Brown also served on the health committee for the National Conference of State Legislatures. He was also a member of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus.

Charlie Brown is married to Angela Baker Brown. They have one child together. The family lives in Gary, Indiana.
