Charli Persip (born Charles Lawrence Persip, July 26, 1929 – August 23, 2020) was a super talented American jazz drummer. He was known for his amazing rhythm and energy. He even changed the spelling of his name from Charlie to Charli in the late 1960s.

About Charli Persip
Charli Persip was born in Morristown, New Jersey. He grew up in Newark, New Jersey. When he was in high school, he chose to go to West Side High School. He picked this school because he wanted to play on their football team! Later, he learned to play the drums from a teacher named Al Germansky.
Early Career and Famous Bands
Charli started playing drums professionally in 1945. In 1953, he played with a musician named Tadd Dameron. He became well-known as a jazz drummer soon after. From 1953 to 1958, he toured and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie. Dizzy Gillespie was a very famous jazz trumpet player. Charli played in both Dizzy's big bands and smaller groups.
After working with Dizzy, Charli joined Harry "Sweets" Edison's band. He also played with the Harry James Orchestra. In 1960, Charli decided to start his own group. He called it the Jazz Statesmen. Some other great musicians in his band were Freddie Hubbard and Ron Carter.
Charli also recorded with many other jazz legends. These included Lee Morgan, Kenny Dorham, Gil Evans, and Eric Dolphy. He was the drummer on a famous recording called Sonny Side Up. This album featured two other jazz greats, Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt. From 1960 to 1973, Charli toured as a drummer and conductor with singer Billy Eckstine.
Charli as a Teacher
Besides performing, Charli Persip was also a respected teacher. From 1974, he taught drums and music in New York City. He worked for an organization called Jazzmobile, Inc.. By 2008, he was a professor at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. This school is in Manhattan.
Supersound Big Band
In the mid-1980s, Charli Persip started his own jazz big band. He first called it Superband. Later, he changed the name to Supersound. Their first album was called Charli Persip and Superband. They released more albums like Superband II and No Dummies Allowed. Their last album was Intrinsic Evolution.
His Final Years
Charli Persip passed away on August 23, 2020. He was 91 years old. He died in New York City at Mount Sinai Morningside hospital. He left behind a wonderful legacy of music and teaching.
