Charlie Waitt's Baseball Journey

Starting in the Major Leagues

Charlie Waitt began his major league baseball career on May 25, 1875. He was 22 years old when he joined the St. Louis Brown Stockings team. During his time with the St. Louis Brown Stockings, Waitt had 113 chances to bat. He scored 23 runs and had 7 strikeouts.

A Pioneer with a Baseball Glove

Charlie Waitt is well-known for being one of the first baseball players to wear a glove. He started using a glove around the 1875 baseball season. At first, fans and his teammates made fun of him for wearing it. They thought it was unusual for a player to use a glove.

The glove Waitt wore was very different from the ones players use today. He wore it to protect his hand. He even tried to make his gloves less noticeable by choosing flesh-colored ones.

Playing for Different Teams

After not playing during the 1876 season, Waitt joined the Chicago White Stockings. This team is now known as the Chicago Cubs. With the Chicago White Stockings, he had 41 at-bats, 4 hits, and 2 RBI.

Five years later, in 1882, Waitt was transferred to the Baltimore Orioles. He played many games for them, getting about 250 at-bats. In 1883, he moved to the Philadelphia Quakers. Charlie Waitt played his last professional baseball game on September 18, 1883.

Later Life and Passing

Charlie Waitt passed away on October 21, 1912, when he was 59 years old. He died in San Francisco after an accident. He was buried in the Sunset Cemetery in San Francisco.
