The First Baseball Glove
Charlie Waitt is famous for being one of the first players to wear a baseball glove. He started using it around the 1875 season. Back then, wearing a glove was very unusual. Fans and even his teammates made fun of him. They called him names like "sissy."
The glove he wore was not like the ones today. It was very thin and meant to protect his hand. He even tried to hide it. He used gloves that were flesh-colored so they would not be noticed easily.

After not playing in 1876, Waitt joined the Chicago White Stockings in 1877. This team is now known as the Chicago Cubs. With them, he had 41 at-bats, 4 hits, and 2 RBIs (runs batted in).
Five years later, in 1882, Waitt moved to the Baltimore Orioles. He played a lot for them, with 250 at-bats. In 1883, he was traded to the Philadelphia Quakers. Charlie Waitt played his last baseball game on September 18, 1883.
