The Charminar is a famous monument and mosque located in Hyderabad, India. It was built in the year 1591. This amazing structure is one of the most well-known buildings in Hyderabad and across India.
The Charminar was built by a ruler named Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. He built it to celebrate the end of a terrible sickness, a plague, that had affected the city. The Charminar is found near the Musi River. It is also close to a busy market called Laad Bazaar and a large mosque called Makkah Masjid. The name "Charminar" comes from two words: Char, meaning "Four", and Minar, meaning "Towers". So, it means "Four Towers".
Some people believe that the Charminar was the very first building put up in the new city of Hyderabad. It is said that Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah made a promise. He vowed to build a mosque if the plague ended. His prime minister, Mir Momin Astarabadi, helped a lot with the design of the Charminar and the layout of the city. The building shows a mix of Indo-Islamic architecture styles, with some ideas from Persia.
