Chattahoochee State Park was a fun outdoor area in the very southeast part of Alabama. It was managed by the government of Houston County, Alabama. The park covered about 596 acres of land. It was located along Irwin's Mill Creek, right on the border between Florida and Alabama. Sadly, the park closed after a big storm called Hurricane Michael caused a lot of damage.
Park History
Long ago, in 1818, some land near the park was where an early fight happened. This fight was part of the Seminole Wars, which were conflicts with Native American tribes.
The state park itself was built in the 1930s. It was created by a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a program during the Great Depression that gave jobs to young men. They worked on projects like building parks and roads.
You can still see their work in the park today. They built a strong stone dam to create the 23-acre CC Pond. They also made the dirt roads that go through the park. You might even find old chimneys and other parts of the camp where these workers lived.
Why the Park Closed
In October 2018, a very powerful storm, Hurricane Michael, hit the park. It destroyed most of the buildings and many trees. Because of all the damage, the park had to close for good. The state did not have enough money to clean up, fix, and rebuild everything.
Past Activities and Fun
Before it closed, Chattahoochee State Park was a great place for outdoor fun. Visitors could go fishing in the pond. Boating was also popular, and there was a boat ramp to launch boats.
The park had places for camping, including spots for RVs and tents. There was also a nice picnic area for families to enjoy meals outdoors. People could relax on the beach or explore the park on eight different hiking trails. There were even special trails just for horseback riding.
