Chaz Calvaron Williams (born April 6, 1991) is an American professional basketball player. He plays as a point guard for the Njarðvík team in Iceland's top basketball league, the Úrvalsdeild karla. Before becoming a professional, Chaz played college basketball for the University of Massachusetts (UMass). During the 2013–14 season, he was seen as one of the best point guards in the entire country.

College Basketball Journey

Chaz Williams was a star player at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School in Brooklyn, New York. He was named the best player in his conference twice. After high school, he decided to play for Hofstra University, which was close to home.

At Hofstra, Chaz quickly became a starter. He scored about 9.8 points and made 4.2 assists per game. An assist is when a player passes the ball to a teammate who then scores. Because of his great play, he was chosen for the Colonial Athletic Association All-Freshman team. After his first year, his coach left Hofstra, so Chaz decided to transfer to UMass.

Playing for UMass

Chaz had to sit out the 2010–11 season because of transfer rules. But when he started playing for UMass in 2011–12, he helped his team win 25 games! He averaged 16.9 points, 6.2 assists, 2.2 steals, and 4.4 rebounds per game. A steal is when a player takes the ball away from an opponent. Rebounds are when a player grabs the ball after a missed shot. Chaz was named first-team All-Atlantic 10 Conference for his amazing performance.

In his junior year, he again made the All-Atlantic 10 team. He averaged 15.5 points and 7.3 assists per game. Even with his strong play, UMass didn't make it to the NCAA Tournament that year. Throughout his time at UMass, Chaz helped his team beat several highly ranked teams. These wins included games against VCU, Dayton, and George Washington.

Senior Season and NCAA Tournament

After his junior year, Chaz thought about joining the 2013 NBA draft. His coach, Derek Kellogg, told him he would likely be picked in the second round. Chaz decided to stay for his senior year. He wanted to try and lead UMass to the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

Before his final season, Chaz was recognized as one of the top players. He was on the watch lists for the Naismith Player of the Year Award and the Bob Cousy Award. The Cousy Award is given to the best point guard in the nation. On February 13, 2014, he was named one of the 30 finalists for the Naismith Player of the Year.

Chaz successfully led UMass to the 2014 NCAA Tournament, where they were a #6 seed. He is also ranked 23rd all-time in career assists in NCAA history, which is a huge achievement!

Professional Basketball Career

After graduating from college, Chaz Williams was not chosen in the 2014 NBA draft. However, he soon began his professional career.

Early Professional Years

In August 2014, Chaz signed with a team called Olin Edirne in the Turkish Basketball League. He played only five games before leaving the team in November. In 2015, he joined the Maine Red Claws in the NBA Development League (now called the G League). He played a few games there before moving to the Delaware 87ers.

Chaz later played for teams in different countries. In 2017, he signed with Korihait in Finland. He averaged 12.6 points and 3.8 assists per game in 11 games.

Playing in Iceland and Beyond

In January 2018, Chaz moved to Iceland to play for Þór Þorlákshöfn in the Úrvalsdeild karla. He had a strong performance there, averaging 15.8 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.9 steals per game in eight games. In February 2019, he played for Wilki Morskie Szczecin in Poland.

In November 2019, Chaz returned to Iceland and joined Njarðvík. He reunited with his former coach, Einar Árni Jóhannsson. At first, he came off the bench, but his great play earned him a starting spot. On January 16, 2020, he scored a season-high 36 points against a rival team, Keflavík. That season, he averaged 20 points, 4.9 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 2.3 steals per game for Njarðvík.

After his time in Iceland, Chaz played for Pelister in North Macedonia, where he continued to put up impressive numbers. He then played for AMSB in France. In May 2023, Chaz Williams made another return to Iceland, signing back with Njarðvík, where he continues to play today.
