Checokalako was a respected chief among the Sauk people. He was one of seven civil chiefs who chose to align with Black Hawk. These chiefs and their followers were part of a group often called the "British Band."

What Was the British Band?

The "British Band" was a group of Sauk, Fox, and Kickapoo people. They were led by Black Hawk. This group decided to return to their traditional lands in Illinois in 1832. They had been asked to move west of the Mississippi River. Their return led to the Black Hawk War.
