A Look Back: The History of Cheek
Cheek began because of a railroad! In the late 1800s, a company called The Gulf & Interstate Railway wanted to build a train line. This line would help farmers send their crops to market. Before the railway, farmers had to take their goods by boat to Galveston. The railway was finished to Beaumont by 1897.
In 1906, John R. Cheek created a stop for this railway. This stop helped farmers and travelers between Beaumont and Winnie. Many people in the area were rice farmers. They used a special canal from the Beaumont Irrigating Company to water their farms.
The Cheek Common School District was started in 1907. A new school building was even built in 1939. By 1925, Cheek had about 40 people living there. The local post office closed in 1928. Later, in the 1970s, large factories like Goodyear and Gulfco were built nearby.
