Pasteurized Process Cheese Spread Explained

Pasteurized process cheese spread is a special processed cheese product. It's made by heating one or more cheeses with other ingredients. Sometimes, special food helpers like emulsifiers (which make it smooth) and stabilizers (which stop it from separating) are added. Things like cream, milkfat, sweeteners, water, salt, and colors can also be part of the mix.

In the United States, this type of cheese spread must have at least 51 percent cheese products. It also needs to have at least 20 percent milkfat. The amount of water in it must be between 44 and 60 percent. To make it, all the ingredients are heated up. Then, the warm mixture is poured into molds or containers to cool down and become solid. Once it's cool, it's ready to be packaged!
