Cherry Lake: A Racing Star

Her Early Life

Cherry Lake was born in 1966. She was a mare, which means a female horse. Her dad was a horse named Lake Erie, and her mom was Cherao. Cherry Lake came from a family of famous racehorses! Her grandfather on her dad's side was War Admiral, a horse who won the very important U. S. Triple Crown. Her mom's family also had famous horses like Nearco and Hyperion.

Racing Adventures

Cherry Lake was a fast runner! She competed in both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred races.

On the Quarter Horse tracks, she raced 21 times over three years. She won 10 of those races, came in second four times, and third twice. She earned a special rating called a Speed Index of 97, which shows how fast she was. She also won a "stakes race," which is a very important race with a big prize. From her Quarter Horse races, she earned a total of $16,651.00.

When she was three years old, she also raced on Thoroughbred tracks. She started nine times, winning three races and coming in third once. This earned her $6,109.00. The next year, when she was four, she raced twice on Thoroughbred tracks and won one race, earning $935.00.

Becoming a Champion Mom

After her racing career, Cherry Lake became a "broodmare." This means she had foals (baby horses) that also became great racers. Some of her most famous foals include Cash Rate, Flow of Cash, Six Popper, and Counting The Cash.

  • Six Popper won a big race called the All American Derby in 1986.
  • Cash Rate was named the World Champion Quarter Running Horse in 1985.

Cherry Lake passed away on July 1, 1993.

Honors and Legacy

Because of her success as a racehorse and especially as a mother to champion foals, Cherry Lake was honored in 1998. She was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Association's (AQHA) AQHA Hall of Fame. This is a very special award for horses who have made a huge impact on the Quarter Horse breed.

Pedigree

Cherry Lake had a strong family tree filled with famous racehorses. Her ancestors include legendary horses like War Admiral and Man o' War. This strong background helped her become a great racer and a fantastic mother to future champions.
