Cherryburn is a special cottage in Mickley, Northumberland, England. It is famous because it was the home of Thomas Bewick. He was a very talented English artist. Thomas Bewick created amazing wood engravings. He was also an expert on birds, known as an ornithologist.

The National Trust has looked after Cherryburn since 1991. This includes the cottage, its farmhouse, and the big gardens. They took over from the Bewick Birthplace Trust. Today, Cherryburn is open for everyone to visit. It is a great place to learn about its history.

Discovering Cherryburn's Past

Thomas Bewick was born in this very cottage in August 1753. He lived and grew up there until he was 14 years old. At that age, he moved to Newcastle upon Tyne. There, he became an apprentice with the Beilby family. An apprentice learns a skill or trade from an experienced master.

Cherryburn as a Museum

Today, the cottage and the farmhouse are a museum. They show what life was like when Thomas Bewick was alive. The cottage has furniture and items that were common back then. This helps visitors imagine daily life in the 1700s.

The farmhouse holds a large collection of Bewick's work. You can see his published books and original engravings. There is also printing equipment on display. This helps you understand how he created his art.
