Cherryburn is a special cottage in Mickley, Northumberland, England. It is famous because it was the birthplace of Thomas Bewick. Thomas Bewick was a very talented English artist. He was known for his amazing wood engravings and for studying birds (an ornithologist).
The cottage, a nearby farmhouse, and large grounds are now a museum. The National Trust has looked after Cherryburn since 1991. They took over from the Bewick Birthplace Trust. Cherryburn is open for everyone to visit.
A Glimpse into Thomas Bewick's Life
Thomas Bewick was born in this cottage in August 1753. He grew up there until he was 14 years old. Then, he moved to Newcastle upon Tyne. There, he became an apprentice to the Beilby family. An apprentice learns a skill from a master. Thomas learned how to engrave pictures.
