The Cherryfield Academy is a really old and important building in Cherryfield, Maine. It's on Main Street. This big building was built in 1850. It looks like a Greek Revival style building. For many years, it was a private school. It also held town offices. The school closed in 1964. After that, the town used all the space. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's a special place worth protecting.
What Cherryfield Academy Looks Like
The Cherryfield Academy building is on the east side of Main Street. It's right in the middle of Cherryfield. It's a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a T-shape when you look down from above. There are chimneys at each end. The building sits on a strong granite foundation.
The front of the building faces south. This part sticks out a bit, forming the top of the "T." This section has three main parts. On top, there's a square bell tower. There are two main doors on the front. You can also find more doors on each side of the sticking-out part. The corners of the building have special flat columns called pilasters. Most of the walls are covered with horizontal wooden boards called clapboard. The east and west ends have different boards called matchboard.
History of Cherryfield Academy
The Cherryfield Academy started as a private school in 1829. In 1850, a special school district was created. Their goal was to build a permanent home for the academy. This led to the construction of the building we see today.
From the very beginning, the building was used for two things. Town offices were on the ground floor. The school used the upstairs rooms. For twenty years, from 1875 to 1895, the academy became a free high school. This meant all students in the area could attend without paying. Later, it went back to being a private school.
The academy finally closed in 1965. This happened after a new, bigger regional high school was built. Today, the building is still very important to the town. Besides the town offices, it also has the town library. It's also used as a community center for everyone in Cherryfield.
