Chetek is a town in Barron County, Wisconsin. In 2020, about 1,726 people lived there. The City of Chetek is also partly located within the town.
A Look Back at Chetek's History
Long ago, in the 1850s, government surveyors explored the area that would become Chetek. They walked the land, measuring it with chains and compasses. In 1854, they finished mapping out the sections of the land.
One surveyor wrote that there was a large stream flowing southeast from a lake. He also noted that Louis Montra had built a house and started farming there. This was the only settlement in the area at that time.
Exploring Chetek's Geography
Chetek is located in the southeastern part of Barron County, Wisconsin. Its eastern edge touches Rusk County. A big part of Chetek is covered by Lake Chetek. This lake is about 22 feet deep at its deepest point.
Many kinds of fish live in Lake Chetek, including panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. You can also find smallmouth bass there. The city of Chetek covers part of the lake, while the town of Chetek covers the rest. Other connected lakes, like Pokegama Lake and Mud Lake, also stretch north into the town.
A major road, U.S. Route 53, runs through the southwest corner of the town. You can get onto this four-lane highway from Exit 126.
The town of Chetek covers about 86.9 square kilometers (about 33.5 square miles) in total. Most of this is land, but about 8.1 square kilometers (about 3.1 square miles) is water.
Who Lives in Chetek?
According to the census from 2000, there were 1,686 people living in the town of Chetek. These people lived in 707 households, and 542 of these were families.
The population was spread out in terms of age. About 19.2% of the people were under 18 years old. About 19.6% were 65 years old or older. The average age in the town was 46 years.
