Permanent exhibits include:

- The history and cool items from the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo celebration.
- Local history of Cheyenne and how it grew.
- Pioneer tools and clothing from early settlers.
- Western and folk art pieces.
The Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum is especially known for its exhibit on the history of Cheyenne Frontier Days. This event is called the "World’s Largest Outdoor Rodeo and Western Celebration."
Clayton Danks was a famous cowboy who won three Cheyenne Frontier Days competitions before 1910. He was the model for the cowboy on the horse Steamboat, which is the famous Bucking Horse and Rider symbol used by Wyoming. In 2013, his family gave the saddle he won in a 1907 competition to the museum.
Shirley E. Flynn was the museum's director from 1987 to 1991. She wrote a book in 1996 called Let's Go! Let's Show! Let's Rodeo! The History of Cheyenne Frontier Days. It tells the story of the Frontier Days celebration.
