The Chief Minister of Haryana is like the main leader or boss of the state government in Haryana, India. Think of them as the captain of the state's team!
According to India's rulebook, the governor is the official head of the state. But the Chief Minister is the one who actually makes the big decisions and runs things.
After elections for the Haryana Legislative Assembly (which is like the state's parliament), the governor usually asks the party that won the most seats to form the government. The governor then chooses the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister and their team of ministers work together. They are all responsible to the assembly. As long as they have the support of the assembly, the Chief Minister serves for five years. There's no limit to how many times someone can be Chief Minister.
Haryana became a state in 1966. Since then, eleven different people have been Chief Minister. The very first one was B. D. Sharma from the Indian National Congress party. Bhajan Lal Bishnoi served the longest, for almost 12 years! Devi Lal, who was the fifth Chief Minister, even became the Deputy Prime Minister of India twice. Om Prakash Chautala has been Chief Minister four times, which is the most times anyone has held the position.
The current Chief Minister is Nayab Singh Saini. He is the second person from the Bharatiya Janata Party to hold this important job. He started his term on March 12, 2024.
