Early Life and Family
Bhajan Lal Bishnoi was born on 6 October 1930. His birthplace was Koranwali village in British India. This area is now part of Pakistan. He belonged to the Bishnoi community.
He grew up facing many challenges. He even sold goods on a bicycle to earn money. He received his education in Bahawalnagar.
Bhajan Lal married Jasma Devi. They had two sons, Chander Mohan Bishnoi and Kuldeep Bishnoi. They also had a daughter named Roshni.
After the Partition of India, Bhajan Lal moved to Adampur, Hisar. At 17, he started buying and selling goods in his village market. He later opened a shop with a local trader.
Political Journey Begins
Bhajan Lal started his political journey in his village. He became a village sarpanch, which is like a village head. Later, he became the chairman of the panchayat samiti in Hisar.
He joined the Congress Party. He became the president of the Congress Mandal in his area.
In 1968, he was first elected to the Haryana Legislative Assembly. This happened during mid-term elections in Adampur. He kept this seat for most of his political career. Only in 1987, his wife won the seat.
Joining the Janata Party
In the 1977 elections, he ran with the Janata Party. He won the elections. When the Janata Party formed the government, Devi Lal became the Chief Minister.
Bhajan Lal was given several important jobs. He was in charge of dairy development, animal husbandry, labor, employment, and forests. However, in 1979, he left the Janata Party. He joined the Congress Party with other MLAs. This change caused the Janata Party government to fall.
First and Second Terms as Chief Minister
After joining the Congress, Bhajan Lal became the Chief Minister of Haryana. He had a very small majority of support at first.
In 1980, the Congress Party, led by Indira Gandhi, won the general elections. Many Janata Party leaders then started to join the Congress. Bhajan Lal managed to get 40 Janata Party MLAs to join the Congress. This gave him a strong majority of 50 MLAs out of 90. He was known for his skill in getting politicians to switch parties.
He was re-elected as Chief Minister on 23 May 1982. He served until July 1986.
1987 Elections and Later
Bhajan Lal did not lead the Congress party in the 1987 elections. The Congress party lost badly in those elections. After this, Bhajan Lal was slowly given less important roles in the party. Newer leaders, like Bhupinder Singh Hooda, became more prominent.
Union Minister and National Politics
In 1986, after his time as Chief Minister ended, he became a Rajya Sabha MP. He was appointed as the Union Minister of Environment and Forests. This was under the Rajiv Gandhi government.
In 1988, he became the Union Minister of Agriculture. In 1989, he was elected to the Lok Sabha. He won from the Faridabad area. He defeated Khurshid Ahmed from the Janata Party.
Third Term as Chief Minister
Bhajan Lal resigned from the Lok Sabha. He then ran in the Haryana Assembly elections in 1991 from Adampur. The Congress party won these elections. He became the Chief Minister for the third time.
However, in the 1996 elections, the Congress party lost significantly. Bhajan Lal did not become Chief Minister again after that.
Leaving the Congress Party
In 2005, the Indian National Congress won elections in Haryana. But the party chose Bhupinder Hooda to be Chief Minister instead of Bhajan Lal. This caused a big disagreement within the party in Haryana.
In 2007, Bhajan Lal announced he would start a new party. He named it the Haryana Janhit Congress. A key reason for this was his son, Kuldeep Bishnoi, being suspended from the Congress party. His son had criticized the party's main leaders.
2009 Lok Sabha Elections
Even at 79 years old, Bhajan Lal decided to run in the 2009 Lok Sabha election. He said he was "young enough to win elections." He ran from Hissar. He won against Sampat Singh, a leader from the INLD. Jai Parkash from Congress came in third place.
Death
Bhajan Lal passed away on 3 June 2011. He died in Hisar after suffering a heart attack.
