The Chief of Staff of the Navy (or AJEMA) is the most important military leader of the Spanish Navy. This person works under the Minister of Defence. They are in charge of the Navy and give military advice to other important leaders. This includes the Chief of the Defence Staff and the Minister of Defence.
The AJEMA has two main jobs. First, they support the Minister of Defence by advising on naval military plans. They also help other leaders with things like how to use Navy personnel and manage money for equipment. Second, they prepare the Navy for action and combat. They train sailors, organize the Navy, and make sure everyone is well cared for. They also figure out what the Navy needs to do its job.
The AJEMA leads the Naval Staff (EMA). This is a group of military officers who help the AJEMA with their duties. The Naval Staff helps organize the Navy, train troops, and manage resources. Important officers in the Naval Staff include the Second Admiral Chief of Staff and leaders of different Navy sections. These sections include the Fleet, Naval Action, Maritime Action, Marines, Naval Air Fleet, and Submarines.
Currently, Admiral Antonio Piñeiro Sánchez holds this position. Before him, Admiral Carlos Martínez-Merello y Díaz de Miranda temporarily took over after Admiral General Antonio Martorell Lacave passed away.

The job of the Chief of Staff of the Navy (AJEMA) began on July 13, 1895. At the same time, the Naval Staff was created. This new role replaced an older position called the Under Secretary of the Navy. Only high-ranking officers, like a Rear admiral, could hold this job.
Changes Over the Years
The AJEMA position disappeared for a short time in 1900. It was brought back in December 1902 as the Chief of the Central Staff of the Navy. But it was removed again in August 1903.
In 1908, the Central Staff of the Navy was created once more. The Chief of Staff of the Navy became an important leader. They would lead meetings to advise the Minister of the Navy on naval matters. This job was for officers with the rank of Vice admiral or Rear Admiral.
In 1927, the role changed names again, becoming the Director-General of Campaign and Services of the Naval Staff. Then, in 1930, the Naval Staff was re-established, and the title of Chief of Staff of the Navy returned.
The Civil War and Beyond
During the Spanish Civil War, both sides of the conflict had their own naval leaders. After the war ended, the Spanish government kept the Naval Staff. The Chief of Staff of the Navy has led it ever since. Many brave admirals have held this important position throughout history, guiding the Spanish Navy.
