Chiesanuova (which means "New church" in Italian) is one of the nine small towns, called castelli, in the tiny country of San Marino. It's home to about 1,143 people (as of May 2018) and covers an area of 5.46 square kilometers.

History of Chiesanuova

In the past, a medieval castle called Busignano stood in this area. In 1320, the people living there decided to join San Marino. The name Chiesanuova came about in the 1500s. This was around the time a church, Saint Giovanni Battista in Curte, was rebuilt. Today, that old church no longer exists.

More recently, Salvatore Conti Square in Chiesanuova was renovated. This project was imagined by an Italian writer named Tonino Guerra. The work on the square was finished in 2011.

Where is Chiesanuova?

Chiesanuova is located in San Marino. It shares borders with two other San Marino towns: San Marino City and Fiorentino. It also borders three towns in Italy: Sassofeltrio, Verucchio, and San Leo.

Chiesanuova is divided into seven smaller areas called curazie. These are like small villages or neighborhoods within the town. The seven curazie are:

  • Caladino
  • Confine
  • Galavotto
  • Molarini
  • Poggio Casalino
  • Poggio Chiesanuova
  • Teglio

A memorial plaque in Salvatore Conti Square

On July 14, 2010, Chiesanuova unveiled a special memorial plaque in Salvatore Conti Square. This idea came from the town's mayor, Franco Santi, and San Marino's ambassador to Sarajevo, Michele Chiaruzzi. The plaque is a public monument dedicated to remembering difficult events that happened in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is one of the first monuments of its kind in Europe.
