Chilcoot is a small, unincorporated community located in Plumas County, California. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It sits high up in the mountains, about 5,013 feet (or 1,528 meters) above sea level. You can find Chilcoot about 17 miles (27 kilometers) east of a town called Portola.
For official counting purposes, Chilcoot is part of a larger area called Chilcoot-Vinton. This area is known as a "census-designated place" (CDP). A CDP is a special area created by the U.S. Census Bureau just for gathering population data.

A Look Back at Chilcoot's History
The Post Office and Its Travels
Chilcoot has a bit of a moving history, especially its post office! The first post office in Chilcoot opened its doors way back in 1898. After a few years, in 1909, it actually moved into a different county, Lassen County. But it didn't stay there for long. In 1910, the post office moved back to Plumas County, where Chilcoot is located today.
What's in a Name?
The name "Chilcoot" itself is quite interesting. Experts believe it might come from the Shawnee language. The Shawnee are a Native American tribe. Many places in California have names that come from Native American languages.
Chilcoot's Climate
Warm Summers and Mild Winters
Chilcoot experiences a type of weather known as a "warm-summer Mediterranean climate." This might sound fancy, but it just means the area has warm and dry summers. The summers are not usually extremely hot, with average monthly temperatures staying below 71.6°F (22°C). The winters are generally mild and wet.
This kind of climate is often found in places like the Mediterranean region, which is why it has that name. Scientists use a system called the Köppen Climate Classification to describe climates around the world. In this system, Chilcoot's climate is abbreviated as "Csb."
