Chili Gulch (also spelled Chile Gulch) is a five-mile long valley in Calaveras County, California. This area was once the richest spot for a type of gold mining called placer mining in the entire county. Placer mining involves looking for gold in loose sand or gravel, often in riverbeds.

The gulch got its name from the Chilean miners who worked there in 1848 and 1849. It was also the location of a serious event known as the Chilean War. Interestingly, some of the largest known quartz crystals were found in a mine on the south side of this gulch. Today, Chili Gulch is recognized as California Historical Landmark #265, marking its important place in history.

The Chilean War: A Conflict Over Gold

The "Chilean War" was a series of conflicts that happened in December 1849. It was a difficult time for miners in California.

Why the Conflict Started

During the California Gold Rush, many people from different countries came to seek their fortune. In Calaveras County, some American miners decided to create new rules. They made a local "mining code" that demanded all miners from other countries leave the area within 15 days. This rule caused a lot of anger and led to serious disagreements.

What Happened During the War

The events of the "Chilean War" led to many protests and some violent clashes. Sadly, some people were hurt or lost their lives during these conflicts. In the end, many Chilean miners were forced to leave their gold claims.

There are different stories about exactly what happened. Some accounts even mention Joaquin Murrieta, a famous figure from that time, being involved on the side of the Chilean miners.

Impact of the Chilean War

The story of the Chilean War in Calaveras County became very well known. In Chile, politicians who were not happy with the United States used this story to gain support from voters. It became a powerful symbol in the politics of the time.
