Discovering Chilnualna Falls

Chilnualna Falls is not just one big waterfall. Instead, it's made up of five different sections, or "tiers," where the water tumbles down. This makes it a "tiered" waterfall. The falls are a favorite place for visitors, especially those who enjoy horseback riding through the park's beautiful scenery.

The Many Drops of the Falls

Each part of Chilnualna Falls has its own unique height, making the journey up or down the trail exciting.

  • The first section is about 90 to 120 feet (27–36 meters) tall.
  • Next, the second part is a smaller drop, about 30 feet (9 meters) high.
  • The third section is the tallest, plunging down an impressive 300 feet (91 meters)!
  • After that, the fourth part is 60 feet (18 meters) high.
  • Finally, the last section is a cascade that drops between 180 and 210 feet (54–64 meters).

Finding the Trail to the Falls

If you want to visit Chilnualna Falls, you'll find the start of the hiking trail in the eastern part of a place called Wawona. You can reach the trailhead at the very end of Chilnualna Creek Road.

The trail begins at an elevation of about 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level. As you hike, the path climbs higher, reaching the main part of the waterfall at about 6,200 feet (1,900 meters). It's a great adventure for those who enjoy a good hike with stunning views!
