The Chiloloba acuta is a special kind of flower chafer beetle. It's the only species in its group, called a genus. You can find these beetles all over the Indian subcontinent.

Discovering the Green Scarab Beetle

Chiloloba acuta beetles are often very shiny. They have short hairs on their bodies, both on top and underneath. These beetles are usually a bright metallic green. Sometimes, they can even look red or deep blue!

What Does It Look Like?

Chiloloba acuta
See the ridge on its back?

The top of the beetle's body has hairs that are spread out. But on its sides and underneath, the hairs are much thicker. A cool feature is a raised line, or ridge, on their wing covers (called elytra). This ridge runs along the middle where the two wing covers meet at the back. There's also a thin ridge that goes from its forehead to the tip of its face part, called the clypeus.

Where Do These Beetles Live?

You can often spot Chiloloba acuta beetles in southern India. They like to hang out on grasses, especially after the rainy season known as the northeast monsoon.

What Do They Eat?

Adult Chiloloba beetles love to eat pollen and flowers. They feed on many different types of grasses. When the adults appear, it's usually when these plants are flowering.

Sometimes, these beetles might munch on crops like sorghum and maize. They can damage the flowers and grains of these plants. However, they usually don't cause serious problems for farmers.

Their Role in Nature

The young beetles, called immatures, live in the soil. They feed on decaying plants and other dead stuff. This helps to move important nutrients around in the soil, which is good for other plants!
